T-Shirt Tips

Though the design on the t-shirt is typically what people see first, it’s technically the color that draws them in. Understanding color theory and referring to the color wheel to know which colors pair well with each other and which ones don’t is a good start to t-shirt printing. The different types of color patterns on the wheel are complimentary (opposites), analogous (next to each other), triadic (evenly spaced out), and monochromatic (same color family). To read more on how colors can aid in your marketing strategy, read below.

  • Remember Color Psychology- If you didn’t know it already, colors can make people feel different emotions. (Ex. Blue = serenity; red = excitement). This can play a huge part in t-shirt printing. Depending on what your message is will depend on what kind of colors you want to use. If you want people to feel happy, try oranges and reds. If you want people to feel content, try blues and greens.

  • What’s the Mood?- Make sure you have the actual design drawn up before choosing your colors. Setting the mood for your artwork is important when figuring out what colors to use. A good mood and compatible color scheme can make any brand pop!

  • There IS Such a Thing as Too Many- Wanting your design to be more vibrant and adding more colors are NOT the same thing. Too many colors can make the design look overwhelming and clunky. The meaning of your design can get lost in all the different colors which isn’t what you want. When it comes to t-shirt printing, it’s also more cost-efficient to use less colors.

  • Consider the Shirt Type- The type of shirt you choose for your design can impact the colors and overall message you’re trying to send out.
  • Shirt Color- You want the color of the shirt to contrast with the colors of your design. If you have dark colors in your design, choose a light-colored shirt.
  • Fabric- Certain fabrics can absorb or reflect light, making certain colors appear more vibrant. If you want your design to pop, consider either white or other light-colored fabrics.
  • Fabric Quality- With t-shirt printing, lower-quality fabrics will cause the ink to look dull and less like how you imagined it.
