Label Design Predictions and Trends for 2022

Just like every other industry, label and packaging design sees new trends every year. Graphic designers have already predicted what the labeling industry will see in terms of the art of labels and packages. Considering that businesses aim to appeal more and more to customers, especially in light of a pandemic, most trends are predicted to appeal to an individual’s sense of serenity and simplicity. We discuss more potential trends for 2022.

Bringing back 60’s psychedelic

At this point, it’s safe to say that the 60s never really went out of style. The psychedelia of the 60s is being introduced to labeling and packaging to instill the idea of happiness, freedom, love, and peace. And this can attract customers, considering these are elements that we all need as we continue to navigate through the pandemic.

Getting creative with text

Label and package designers are finding more ways to bring art into text and lettering. All too often, people forget that lettering is an art, in and of itself! Designers are predicated to celebrate this art more as we continue on into 2022. This trend intends to challenge the everyday perspectives of fonts, where lettering is seen more as art as opposed to informational pieces of packaging.

Elements of peace

Just as we briefly mentioned, we are going into the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic and everyone can use a bit of peace every now and then. Companies and businesses are making packages and labels with more muted colors and tones to provide customers with that calm and mindful sense. This simple method of design can also attract customers to take the time to read labels and packaging.

Color gradients

Plain white packaging was on the rise in 2021, but now, graphic designers are putting it to the test by adding a splash of color with gradients. Color gradients are found to be rather satisfying and impressive to look at, meaning customers will be more attracted to products that have these elements of labeling and packaging and stop them in their tracks as they shop.

Less on the outside, more on the inside

The idea of learning more about what a product has to offer, even with the packaging alone, can have an exciting effect on customers. It is predicted that products will have minimal designs on the outside to introduce intricate and colorful packaging on the inside, surprising their customers, ultimately leading them to continue buying these products. Just like that, customers can become regular for these businesses.

90’s nostalgia

Alongside the 60s, the 90s is an era that simply cannot be forgotten. For many of us, it feels as if the 90s was not that long ago and the retro comeback is making its way in packaging and labeling. The new year predicts that the 90s era will be displayed through primitive internet frames, bright color blocks, elements of slime, the entire touch of “old-school”.

Freeform doodles

While doodles may be represented as meaningless shapes and drawings when your mind wanders in class, graphic designers tell us otherwise. The industry of graphic design is turning the idea of “doodling” into an art that can be admired by anyone! Companies are coming up with personal ideas to talk more about who they are as a team and what they mean to a customer.

Discovery beyond the world

Also on the rise in the world of packaging and labeling is the idea of “escapism”. Considering the time we spend at home in efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, people are wandering more into their personal worlds, discovering more and more about themselves. In a sense, we all have a personal form of “escape”, even if it is done in our rooms! This idea is being reflected in labeling.

“Anti-design”

Graphic design is bending its own rules. Anti-design is the idea of breaking traditional design principles, showing customers that a company has much more to offer than informational text and a product. While the style is being criticized, it has achieved exactly what it intends on doing: liberating itself from beauty standards, even when it comes to labeling and packaging.
